The Midtown Urban Renaissance Corporation celebrated their 3rd Annual Harvest Moon Ball on Friday, October 24, 2008 at the Jumping Brook Country Club. The event was hosted by Dr. Bob Lee of WBLS Radio, 107.5 FM and DJ Faze from Faze Flow Entertainment. They kept everyone out on the floor “Dancing to the Oldies” and having a good time. Vocalist Jamilah Joseph opened the program with three soulful selections to let everyone know they were in for a good night. We would like to Thank all that attended and for showing your support for the organization.
Honorees this year were MURC senior trustees Nate Cave, Ermon K. Jones, Yvonne Earley-Proute, Brenda and James Terrell, June E. West and former Neptune Mayor, Patricia Monroe. Past members included Josephine McElrath and former Midtown Community Director, Gwendolyn Love. Neptune Mayor Randy Bishop presented all the honorees with Community Service Certificates. He also presented Honorary MURC Trustee, Edythe Douglass with a citation declaring October 24th “Edythe Douglass Day” in the township of Neptune.
Former Township Committeeman, Michael Golub presented the MURC organization with a large historical print that depicts a scene in the House of Representatives (dated January 31, 1865), when Slavery was abolished. MURC president, Dianna Harris states that “it represents the start of a new era for the African American Culture. As we move forward with the redevelopment of West Lake Avenue, it is important to understand just how far we’ve come and how much further we still need to go”. The print will be hung in the office space that the organization will be acquiring in the redevelopment plan.
MURC would like to thank all of the businesses and patrons that contributed to the ad journal and gift auction. Click here for that list. Special thanks must be given to Mr. Van Eaton from Grant Capitol Management, Columbus, Maryland and developer Mr. Tom Clark from CityWorks, for their generous contributions to this event. CityWorks was awarded the West Lake Avenue Redevelopment and Ridge Avenue Housing Projects in Neptune.
MURC is still accepting donations to help reach a goal of $10,000.00. Funds are needed to facilitate community programs and workshops that will empower residents in the Midtown Community and surrounding areas, which are undergoing redevelopment. Checks can be made payable to MURC and mailed to 57 So. Main Street, #270, Neptune, NJ 07753. MURC is a NJ 501(C)(3) nonprofit therefore all donations are tax deductable.
