THE UNITED COMMUNITY MEETING ON JULY 21ST AT THE SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH IN ASBURY PARK IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MURC AND THE WESTSIDE CITIZENS UNITED. TWO GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS IN TWO TOWNS THAT SHARE STREETS, INTERESTS, CONCERNS, DIVERSITY, RESOURCES AND ECONOMICS ARE COMING TOGETHER TO HELP IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE MIDTOWN SECTION OF NEPTUNE AND ON THE WEST SIDE OF ASBURY PARK.

LET’S THINK ABOUT IT!

GUN FIRE AND THE TAKING OF PRECIOUS LIVES IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN OUR COMMUNITIES. PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE; TO WALK DOWN THEIR STREET, PLAY IN THEIR YARD AND SIT ON THEIR PORCH WITHOUT BEING AFRAID OF GETTING SHOT. WHAT EVER THE UNDERLYING PROBLEMS MAY BE, WE MUST REACH OUT TO FIX IT IN A NON VIOLENT WAY, AND NOT GIVE UP HOPE IN OUR YOUNG PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITY OR OUR SELVES. IT IS UP TO US, EACH INDIVIDUAL TO MAKE THINGS BETTER AND NOT WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR US. THERE WILL BE OBSTACLES BUT CAN OVERCOME THEM BY FIRST RESPECTING LIFE AND ONE ANOTHER.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!

THE SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS ARE RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY WITH OUR OWN PEOPLE, RESOURCES, AGENCIES, ORGANIZATIONS, NONPROFITS, CHURHES AND GOVERNMENT. IF ONLY WE COULD UNDERSTAND THAT IT BEGINS FROM WITHIN. SOMETIMES IT DOESN’T TAKE MONEY, JUST A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE AND A WILLINGNESS TO COMMUNICATE.

LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

LOOK AROUND AND YOU WILL SEE CHANGE THAT’S FINALLY HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITIES. WE MUST KEEP THE PEACE INORDER FOR IT TO CONTINUE. LET US LEARN FROM THE RIOTS IN 1970 WHERE WE DESTROYED A VIBRANT COMMERCIAL AREA ALONG SPRINGWOOD AVENUE AND IT TOOK 40 YEARS FOR IT TO BEGIN TO BE REVITILIZED. WE CAN’T BLOW IT NOW. WE’VE COME TOO FAR.

Violet A., a Mercer County homeowner, is the first client approved to receive utility assistance. Violet was referred to the TRUE grant program through the legislative office of Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo (District 14).

Violet qualified for the TRUE program due to temporary loss of job and income although she and her husband are now both employed following a period of unemployment. Thanks to assistance through the TRUE grant, their outstanding utility bill balance will be credited to PSE&

The one-time TRUE assistance program is intended for qualified renters or home owners throughout New Jersey who, because of an economic hardship such as loss of employment or under-employment, are struggling to pay their electric and/or natural gas bills. Households may receive a maximum annual benefit of $1,500, with an estimated average award ranging from $500 to $600. The maximum benefit includes a payment of up to $750 for each utility, electric and natural gas.

The Affordable Housing Alliance is the recipient of a $2,500 donation to support general development and construction of affordable housing. “This funding enables us to increase the scope of the essential services we can offer to clients,” says Donna M. Blaze, Affordable Housing Alliance CEO. “With the help of Investors Savings Bank, we can move more households from non-home owner to home owner in 2011.”

Get A Seat On The 2011 Monmouth County Housing Choices Showcase Bus Tour
Interested in learning more about affordable housing in Monmouth County? Be a guest of the Monmouth Advocacy Team, supported by the Monmouth County Association of REALTORS and the United Way of Monmouth County, for the 2011 Housing Choices Bus Tour on Wednesday, May 4. The Tour will focus on key elements of the “Housing Puzzle,” including the Live Where You Work mortgage program, environmentally-friendly affordable housing, and the wide range of housing options in Monmouth County.

The Tour will visit several communities within Monmouth County, including homes developed by the Affordable Housing Alliance, Coastal Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Neighbors, Pennrose Properties and TRF Development Partners. You will visit rental and for sale units; single family detached homes and multi-unit complexes; family and senior developments; new construction and renovation/conversion; and inclusionary and all-affordable developments.

Guests should RSVP no later than Wednesday, April 13 to Kaarina Romero at 732-938-5988 x10 or kromero@uwmonmouth.org. Participants will gather at the Monmouth County Agricultural Building, 4000 Kozloski Road in Freehold, at 8:00 a.m., depart by commercial coach at 9:00 a.m. and arrive back at about 12:30 p.m. A light breakfast will be provided before and a light lunch after, plus brief presentations on financing for first-time home buyers and building economically and sustainably. The program will end at approximately 1:30 p.m. There is no fee to participate but registration is required.

Get Help with Essential Home Repairs
Homeowners can get help with home repairs through the Mt. Laurel Housing Rehabilitation Program, administered by the Affordable Housing Alliance . This initiative helps seniors, low-income households and other qualified homeowners make critical home repairs. The program is funded through trust funds dedicated in municipal COAH housing plans.
Tim McCorry, AHA’s Director of Capital Projects, is currently working on six rehabilitation projects in Marlboro. Thanks to this program, the AHA is supervising repairs to the Marlboro home of Alfonso and Di L., adding a new roof to their home and installing a new hot water heater, new attic fan and new replacement windows. Funds from the program may be used to repair conditions deemed to be health or safety hazards, improve energy performance, and/or replace malfunctioning equipment.
McCorry says, “Homeowners are incredibly grateful to get help from this program. It helps them to make repairs they would not have been able to afford otherwise, and it helps families stay in their homes and neighborhoods by making their homes livable.”
The program provides a one-time only interest-free deferred loan to replace or repair major systems in the home including heating, electrical, plumbing, roof, structural and weatherization. A mortgage and a mortgage note in the amount of the repairs will be attached to the property for a period specified by the township to be satisfied if the property is transferred, rented or sold within that period.
“This program not only helps people who can’t afford to fix up their homes, it helps improve the look of their neighborhoods,” says Donna M. Blaze, AHA CEO. “Safe, decent and affordable housing is vital to the quality of life in all communities. These improvements benefit the entire community.”
